Keep Youth Doing Something Inc., is a  501 (c)3 nonprofit organization.

HISTORY

Keep Youth Doing Something Inc., known by the acronym “KYDS”, was established in 1989 as a community-led effort to reclaim a city park that had fallen out of use due to drug and gang-related issues. Due to the motivated coalition community leaders, local LAPD police officers, and a Los Angeles City Councilperson, our organization succeeded in cleaning up the park and establishing free evening sports leagues for children and teens in the area. We found that children and teens were often in the park because families were  unable to afford the cost of programs offered by the park.

Throughout the years, thanks to the support of many generous partners, KYDS has grown to offer a wide variety of quality programs, opportunities, and services FREE to thousands of economically struggling families and their children.

TODAY

KYDS programs serve children in grades TK – 12th (ages 4 to 18+) living throughout Los Angeles and a few surrounding communities. We offer options for young people to experience new successes and expand their vision of possibilities in “safe havens” were children develop caring and respectful relationships with each other and with responsible, nurturing adults. It is our goal that the children and families we serve come away knowing that they have many attainable options and the power to make a positive impact on their community.

Our programs are designed to keep children and teens safe and engaged during the critical hours between the end of the school day, and the time most parents are able to return home from work. Youth participating in KYDS programs, reduce their odds of engaging in at risk behaviors, decrease the likelihood of falling victim to neighborhood crime, and they increase their chances of academic success!

Our organization relies on the generosity of local businesses, foundations, caring individuals, and the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Beyond the Bell Branch for the support needed to provide FREE services. We currently employ a staff of 100+ dedicated individuals providing a wide variety of educational and enrichment programs to over 2000 children and teens each year!

KYDS can provide services in schools, parks, group homes, domestic violence shelters, low income housing, etc.  If requested, KYDS can provide fee based programs in higher income communities with profits supporting additional free services to low income youth.
